Sleeping on worn-out mattresses 'is inadvisable'
It is well-documented that getting a good night's sleep has significant health benefits
but many people in the UK and elsewhere fail to achieve sufficient periods of restfulness on a regular basis.
One possible cause of a lack of sleep or poor-quality snoozing is using a mattress that is substandard, according to one expert.
Dr Kevin Wong, who is a chiropractor, noted that many people do not choose to buy a new mattress until their old one has worn out.
This means it is "tattered, torn, excessively stained and/or otherwise unappealing to sleep on", he noted.
The medic went on to state that it is generally not a good idea to keep such an item for more than ten to 15 years due to wear and tear. However, depending on the quality, some may last longer, he conceded.
Meanwhile, when consumers make the decision to purchase a new sleeping aid of this kind, there are a number of things they should bear in mind, he added.
For example, simply going to a shop and lying on a mattress is not enough to know whether it will be suitable for them.
Rather, people need to test them out in a sleeping environment, Dr Wong claimed.
He went on to say there is no specific kind of product that suits everyone as some people prefer firm objects on which to sleep while others like softer ones.
"As long as it adequately supports your head, neck and back during sleep (meaning you don't sink into it excessively or don't hurt the next day from lying on something that feels like your hard floor), it's what makes you sleep well that matters most," he suggested.
There is disagreement among specialists concerning how much sleep people need, but it is generally accepted that between seven and eight hours is sufficient.
