Slips Accidents At Work

Slip accidents at work are a common cause of injury in the workplace

, and everyday employees suffer due to spilt substances, wet floors and unsuitable footwear.

The prevalence of slip accidents at work has recently been highlighted by an investigation into the supermarket Morrisons. The review was prompted after the supermarket was recently ordered to pay 50,000 after an employee slipped in a food preparation area. The member in staff in question was preparing meat for the food counter when she slipped on oil, fracturing her elbow in the process. She subsequently had to undergo three operations and was forced to take seven months off work.

Just six months before the accident, managers of the store had voiced their concerns regarding the food preparation area, stating it posed a slip hazard. Recommendations were made to improve safety, such as using resin to roughen the floor and providing staff with anti-slip footwear. Nevertheless, such measures failed to be implemented.

After the incident, the local authority investigated some 430 Morrison stores. It found that in 2007 alone, there were 144 slip accidents in food preparation areas.

Preventing Slip Accidents at Work.

Every employer has a duty to protect the health, safety and well-being of their staff. To fulfil this legal obligation, it is (amongst other things) necessary to carry out regular risk assessments. This will help to determine what hazards put employees in danger of harm, and what can be done to prevent this from happening. Such safety measures should then be implemented and revised as necessary. If there is a failure to do so, an employer has breached their legal responsibility.

This type of breach is clearly demonstrated in the example above. Indeed, Morrisons carried out a risk assessment, identifying the threat posed by the slippery floor in the food preparation area. Ways of improving employee safety were then recommended. However, these recommendations were ignored, and consequently a member of staff was injured.

Can You Make A Claim?

If you have suffered an injury because of a slip accident at work, and your employer can be held liable, you will be able to make a personal injury claim. However, it is important to remember that each slip accident is different. That is why you really need to seek expert legal advice to discover whether or not you are entitled to make a work accident claim.

If your claim is successful, you will be awarded a sum of compensation. This will help you recover the loss of finances you have incurred as a result of your accident (such as a loss of earnings). It will also recompense for the pain and suffering you have experienced because of your employer's negligence.
