Slogan And Printed T-shirts: A History

Printed and slogan t-shirts are well known for being ironic

, quirky, weird and often controversial or political. They come in an abundance of styles offering a wild array of messages and for decades have been largely fashionable.

At the start of the 21st century, t-shirts sporting ironic, comedic or humorous prints or slogans became very popular and are, in fact, still popular today, but some of the first to achieve success were designed by Katharine Hamnett during the 1980s and more often than not, these t-shirts contained an important political message.

Slogan t-shirts tend to make a statement and can sometimes be offensive or even pornographic to some. Many of the most famous slogan t-shirts created by Hamnett were adopted by famous pop bands including Wham! One particularly popular slogan was 'Choose life' which appeared on a t-shirt worn in the music video to Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. This was also worn by Roger Taylor in the Queen video Hammer To Fall and was intended to convey peace and harmony in the face of times of war and violence.

The "Frankie Say" slogan appeared on t-shirts used to promote the record label's Frankie Goes To Hollywood. Paul Morley is the designer responsible for their creation and has since been fairly notorious for designing t-shirts that present controversial political messages. Along with Hamnett, he created one of the two most politically controversial t-shirts of the last 30 years, including the message "58% don't want Pershing" and "No War, Blair Out".

Many sceptics suggest that t-shirt slogans accomplish very little. Hamnett herself suggests slogans are merely a substitute for real action and achieve next to nothing in the long run. It is easy to gauge where these shirts have been used as mere promotional or marketing tools, especially with regard to celebrities sporting the latest 'political' design.

T-Shirts. Slogan t-shirts, however, don't always have to have something important to say. The majority of them available on the market today have nothing more to convey than a comedic or an ironic message.
