Slow PC - Lets take a look at some options
This is probably one of the most complained about issues with a PC
, you remember how quick it was when you first got it and now its much slower.
After you've been using your PC for a few hours opening programs, creating and deleting files or just surfing the internet you may notice it starts to slow down.
Internet related - Does it happen at a set time of the day?
Your antivirus could be set to scan your PC at a set time, open your antivirus software and see if you have it set to automatically scan.
Are you using the internet at peak time each day? Although service providers have got a lot better at supplying some decent bandwidth some will still suffer at peak time. Try your internet connection at a different time of the day or at the weekend, if its quicker then chances are you need to upgrade your internet package.
Are you downloading something in the background? You could have certain programs like antivirus, Windows update or a whole mixture of other programs downloading updates in the background. Usually you will get an icon in the bottom right corner of the screen with running programs, check to see if a new icon is there and see what its doing, usually by double clicking it.
Internet related - Does it happen all the time?
OK, so its not just happening at a certain time of the day its all the time. The first thing to do is to clear all of your temporary internet files, your browser stores files such as photos from websites you've visited so it doesn't have to download them each time you do to the site. Eventually there are thousands of these files and it actually slows down your internet experience instead of speeding it up.
You could have malware on your PC, the easiest way to get rid of malware is by using one of these programs
Adaware
MalwareBytes
They are both easy to use and have fully working free versions. There are many programs on the internet that will do the same job to varying degrees, these two are my favourite.
PC Suites
Remove your Internet suite, I've noticed that in particular AVG and Nortons suites can cause some big problems slowing down a PC, they seem fine on installation but have been known to slow down the PC greatly when something goes wrong with them. Uninstall them and chose a lighter weight program.
Virus
It could be a virus, now to all novice PC users the word virus fills them with fear, don't panic, just run a thorough virus scan. Antivirus programs are supposed to do the same thing but they don't, some are much better than others. My personal preference is
aVast which again is free to use for personal use. I have known aVast catch virus's that other antivirus programs will miss. In my opinion it is one of the best antivirus programs out and what's even better is that it is free.
The Windows Registry could be bloated
Now you could go into the registry and clean it up manually but you would have to be mad and have a lot of time on your hands, plus you would need to know exactly what to delete and guess what.. you don't. If you go and delete things from the Registry without knowing exactly what your doing your going to create a lot of problems and could turn a slow PC into a PC that wont start at all.
You need a program to do this for you both programs listed below will tidy up the registry and they are free to use for a time. There are many registry cleaning programs on the internet which will scan your registry and list all the problems, the trouble is to actually fix the errors you need to pay for the program which can be quite frustrating after waiting 5 10 minutes for the scan to complete.

You could have a corrupt System File
Windows is made up of a lot of important files that are needed for it to function correctly, sometimes these files can get corrupted. This can even happen by installing a program and it updates a file which other programs cant use. Sometimes when you uninstall a program it will tell you that a file isn't needed anymore and so you remove it later to find out that it actually is needed.
Fortunately there is a program that ships with windows that will check and replace these files its called SFC (System File Checker). If you go to a DOS prompt and type in SFC it will launch the program. You will need your original windows disk so it can copy across the files it needs.
New hardware or driver added
If you have recently installed a new piece of hardware such as a printer then disconnect it and see if that makes a difference. Always make sure you have the correct driver installed for your hardware, believe it or not some new driver versions actually create problems. This is especially true with graphics drivers.
Too Many Startup programs
If your sat there looking in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and see one program after another slowly coming to life then its time to ask yourself if you need all of them running when Windows starts. Most programs will let you disable "start with Windows" in their main options but sometimes they don't.
To stop the unwanted programs from launching you can use a program that comes with windows called MSCONFIG. Go to start then run and then type in msconfig, bash enter and the program will start. If you go to the startup tab you will see a list of all the programs that start with Windows.
Uncheck any that you don't need and restart the PC.
De-Frag
When you delete files they create a space on the PC for new files but sometimes that space isn't big enough to put a new file into. Instead of the space being wasted, Windows will invisibly chop up the new file and spread it out over several small spaces.
When you come to start the program or open the saved file Windows needs to put it back together again before you can use it which can slow things down quite a lot on a badly fragmented drive.
Use Defrag' once a month to rearrange your files automatically back into normal groups. You can find defrag in your Accessories->System Tools folder.
