Slow Windows Laptop - Internet Explorer works at a snails pace what can I do?
An when your problem doesn't really give you an error message to work with, but just hangs, then it is even more frustrating, not to mention time consuming to deal with a
slow windows laptop.
So, if you problem is "Windows Not Responding" then you first need to decide is it the Windows operating system or is it really Windows internet Explorer. Is your entire system hung or just your internet browser? If you cancel your browser session will other applications on your system function as normal.
If your problem is really Internet Explorer, as is often the case, then here are a few things you can try to resolve your problem with a slow windows laptop.
Remove temporary Internet files, Web form data and browsing history data.
Web page content that you have previously viewed is stored on your hard drive in a temporary internet files folder (cache). This storage allows internet explorer to download just the content that has changed on that page since the last time you viewed the page. This cache can become rather large and filled with pages that you may never re-visit.
Cleaning this file will often resolve slow browser or hung session problems.
To delete the files in the Temporary Internet File Folder, follow these steps:
1.) Quit all instances of Windows Explorer and quit Internet Explorer
2.) Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options
3.) On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files
4.) In the Delete Files, dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box, and then click OK
5.) Click OK.
Not Your Problem
If the above does not resolve your problem or your problem wasn't while using your browser then you have some other things to consider to fix your slow windows laptop.
You can try going to support.microsoft.com and searching through the knowledge base to see if any of the problems reported there match up to your situation and follow their recommendation for a resolution.
If you have not been practicing "safe computing" then you may have picked up a virus, need to clean your system of adware and spyware or need to clean your registry.
Adware and Spyware are little files placed on your hard drive while you are surfing the net by advertisers so they can unknowingly spy on your surfing activity. When you collect a lot of these files if can impact your computer's performance. You may see it hang, get slower and slower or do other erratic things.
Another crucial thing to consider is the condition of your windows registry. If your PC is running more and more slowly, pops up mysterious error messages, gets the blue screen on startup or your browser is freezing from time to time then you may have missing or invalid references in your Windows registry that need to be repaired.
To get rid of adware and spyware and fix registry errors you need to download a system and registry scanner. This will search for malicious software and also repair registry errors and optimize your computer to run faster.
