Small Couch Options When You Have A Narrow Doorway Or Staircase

Have you ever bought a piece of furniture only to get it home and find out that it will not fit through the doorway

? Maybe you bought a couch that will not fit down the stairs, or one particular wall is angled too sharply to slide it by.

This frustration is a common one, so you are not alone. It is not hard to become distracted when you are shopping and forget to consider whether the furniture will actually fit into the room.

Most couches (or sofas) built for US consumers are at least 78" long and have at least 66" of seating space between the arms.

After the sofa, a love seat is the most commonly bought item for American living rooms. They usually measure between 56" and 66" in length and have 44" - 48" of seating space between the arms.

The vast majority of upholstered furniture manufacturers in the US sell one size sofa and one size loveseat in each of their styles. As you can see above there is a considerable gap between the 66" of seating space for the couch and the 44" of seating space for the love seat. Small couches, also known as Apartment-size sofas are designed to fill that gap.

European designed sofas/couches are usually smaller scaled than American made products and are therefore one good alternative for those looking for smaller seating pieces. Often made in the Far East they are shipped flat in containers to minimize shipping costs.

Most RTA (Ready to Assemble) sofas are usually designed to be sold at low prices. Unfortunately, the quality level is also low. There is also a limited number of styles and an even more limited selection of fabrics.

Mid-priced American furniture is typically far sturdier and more comfortable. There is also the problem of assembly which can take between 1 and 2 hours for most of these products.

Only recently have a few American manufacturers recognized the potential demand of customers requiring better quality small sofas or couches.

Everyone knows that good quality custom-built sofas can cost thousands of dollars. Surprisingly there are also well-built custom sofas available in smaller sizes that are priced below $1000 - 60".

These custom-built small, apartment-size couches can come in dozens of different fabrics and can be specially designed to fit through narrow doorways and staircases.

Even though they are custom built to your specifications, they can be built and shipped in 4 weeks or less and cost less than $1000.
