Turkey used this as a pretext to get into the southern part of the region. Turkish forces stayed after a cease-fire, creating the partition of the island; an aim of the country since 1955. The intercommunal assault and pursuing Turkish attack led to the displacement of a large number of Cypriots and the business of an individual Turkish Cypriot governmental business in the South.

These situations and the ensuing government are issues of continuous argument.
