The other morning while getting the train to Rome, I met two women who were extremely angry about having to return to work. I know that one had been called back to her office for three days and was furious. She happened to growl about that when buying her ticket. The second woman descended from a car and angrily demanded where she could buy a ticket. Having bought the ticket, she then did an amazing thing in that she crouched down on the platform and started to apply what presumably was a smooth wrinkle free skin cream to her face, much to the amazement of waiting passengers!

Maybe it was a moisturizer, I honestly do not know. However, the whole scenario set me thinking about what the average consumer of skincare products knows about the ingredients in them. I am convinced that in that smooth wrinkle free skin cream, there were parabens which have been used as preservatives in cosmetics since the 1920s. That is almost a hundred years! It is hard to believe sometimes that we are in the third millennium. That is why I always make sure that any products I buy are paraben free. Why?

First, they are chemical preservatives and they actually mimic the hormones in our bodies and that can lead to all sorts of health problems with our endocrine glands such as the thyroid and the ovaries and also the male reproductive system.

If we produce too much estrogen, that can lead to breast cancer and estrogen seems to thrive on parabens. The main ones to look out for are ethylparaben, butylparaben and propylparaben.

You may think that all this talk is exaggerated and that parabens cannot get into the bloodstream so easily but it is a medical fact that the skin can absorb up to 60% of anything applied to it. If you are really in doubt, just think why medical patches of all types are used so widely. They definitely get into the bloodstream.

What are the safest ingredients which can be found in a smooth wrinkle free skin cream. Are they safe and are they skin friendly? Are they free from synthetic chemicals such as the parabens abut also are they completely organic so that there is no harm done? These are very important questions and we must ask them before we buy any skincare product
