Once your message has been successfully sent to the server, it then searches out the recipient's mail server and transfer it there. To locate the recipient's server, first the domain name(that is data that follows the @ symbol) is located. It is then searched with a domain name server, finally spotting the recipient's server. It is after this that a link is established between your mail server and the recipient's mail server. The SMTP mail is then forwarded to the recipient mail server. The mail sometimes does not get delivered immediately. This may be due to technical problems that have occurred at the recipient end of the string. Such a situation is generally handled by sending the message to the sent-mail queue. The sent-mail then tries to resend the mail time and again at regular intervals. The interval may be of 15 minutes. After trying for at-least 4 hours it will generally send you a mail intimating you that some problem has occurred. This process continues for 5 days at the most, after which the send-mail configuration returns the undelivered mail to you. In case the SMTP mail has been successfully delivered, it will be stored in the POP3 server of the recipient, and finally be viewed by the recipient in his or her in-box.
