When you are taking a long road trip it may be very difficult to stay awake
. This is particularly the case if the road trip goes late into the night or if the landscape is boring and there is little traffic.
There are many things you can do to protect your safety, the safety of those in your car, and the safety of others who may be on the road with you. One of the most popular things to do is to eat a quick snack.
A snack can boost your blood sugar level and give you energy to keep your eye lids up and your brain on what you are doing. Unfortunately, many of the snacks that can be picked up on the side of the road at gas stations give you a sharp energy boost and a quick sugar drop which can leave you feeling more tired than before.
In addition, many of these snacks are not healthy and can result in health problems both for the driver and others in the car. However, there are several snacks that are available to you and which are fairly healthy.
These snacks will also give you more sustained energy levels so that you do not suffer from a sugar crash. One of the most popular and healthy road snack is trail mix.
Trail mix can contain a variety of nuts, dried fruit, bits of chocolate, crackers, and so forth. The variety of foods provides a variety of nutrients as well as different levels of energy that last different amounts of time.
This food will give you more energy longer because of the variety of food. The sugary things will give you immediate energy while the less sugary things will give you energy when normally the sugar crash would hit.
Homemade trail mix is also easy to make before your trip and it can be easily customized to each family member. Simply set out all of the ingredients on the counter and have everyone fill up their Ziploc bag with the ingredients that he or she likes the most.
This will save complaints and "Can we stop ____?" questions later down the road. In addition, everyone has their own bag so no one will complain that someone else ate everything and not he or she is hungry.
Whoever eats their bag first will simply have to wait to eat until you stop for the next meal. If your kids know this, they may ration their bags throughout the car trip so that they will not be hungry later.
As a result, you kids may eat less. This is a good thing as they are simply sitting in the car and not burning too many calories.
Another food that is a quite popular road snack is chips. Chips are often viewed as unhealthy, but there are now quite a few healthy varieties of chips.
There are many different flavors of chips that you can enjoy so it is easy not to get tired of this snack. In addition, it is relatively mess free as long as you do not choose cheese covered Cheetos or a similar variety.
Another snack that is quite healthy and good for road trips is breakfast. Sometimes it can be difficult to wake up in the morning, in which case, breakfast is the perfect snack.
However, breakfast is good at other times of the day as well. Fresh fruit, cereal bars, healthy muffins, yogurt, and so forth are all healthy and can give you the energy boost that you need.
In addition to snacks you may also want to consider taking some drinks with you in the car. Cars are often quite hot, particularly during the summer.
Sometimes you do not actually need to eat anything because your body simply lacks water. The more dehydrated you are, the harder it will be to focus on the road.
In addition, a cold fruit juice or sport drink can provide you with replenishing nutrients, sugars, and other things that will help you feel energized and stay awake. It is a good idea to store some water bottles in the car in case you come back from an activity and need a drink.
Cheese is also a quite popular road snack. Children tend to prefer string cheese and mini cheddar cheese slices, but you may want some other varieties such as pepper jack.
Cheese can help you feel full on only a little snack. In addition, it tastes wonderful.
