Learn About Ancient Greece on European Vacations

Take a walk through history with a visit to ancient Greece on European vacations. In the center of Athens, on your way to the Acropolis, watch out for the Hadrians Arch, a structure spanning an ancient road leading to the complex of structures on the citys east side. This complex included the Temple of Olympian Zeus, said to have been built to celebrate the arrival of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, to honor him for his many significant contributions to the city. From Athens, you can drive through the fertile plains of Boeotia and arrive at Delphi. On the slopes of the magnificent Mount Parnassus you will find the center of the ancient world. From this spot you will be able to see the ruins of the Temple of Apollo and the Sanctuary of Apollo Pythios. Marvel at the wealth of the ancient times with a visit to the Treasury of the Athenians. Visit the museum where you can learn about ancient Greek masterpieces such as the world renowned bronze Charioteer.

European Vacations to Nice, France

The museums of Nice are great places to visit during the summer if you're on European vacations. Aficionados of contemporary art will love the Muse dArt Moderne et dArt Contemporain and its large permanent collection of Pop Art and New Realism styles as well as those from the Nice School. Galerie Jean Renoir highlights new, young local talent, and is free. Matisse fans will be treated to a huge collection of his paintings, engravings, drawings and personal effects at the quaint 17th century villa called Muse Matisse. The bare structure of the Muse National Message Biblique Marc Chagall is contrasted by the strong colors of its paintings with biblical themes that are almost an assault on the senses. After touring the lovely museums of the city, head to the charming churches of Nice. French baroque religious architecture is a prominent influence on the Chapelle de la Misricorde while the Cathdrale Saint Nicolas is one of the most striking examples of Russian Orthodox architecture outside of Russia.

European Vacations to Pious Rome

Rome has many beautiful churches that could make your European vacations more memorable and meaningful. The city has five patriarchal basilicas, ceremonially assigned to one of the patriarchs. San Giovanni in Laterano, for St. John Lateran, the Pope, is the popes first church. Designed in Baroque style, it is the cathedral of Rome. The Patriarch of Antioch, St. Mary Major, was assigned the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore -- an exquisite structure with 5th century religious mosaics, marble flooring, brilliant ceilings and a bell tower. San Pietro in Vaticano, for St. Peter's Basilica, the Patriarch of Constantinople, is in the Vatican City. It is the current church of the pope, and one of the largest and most important Catholic churches in the world. Inside the large interior, you can see a lot of marble, bronze, and gold artwork, not the least of which is Michelangelo's Pieta. It is said that the Apostle Paul is buried in Rome's second largest church -- San Paolo fuori le Mura, for St. Paul Outside the Walls, the Patriarch of Alexandria.

European Vacations to Picturesque Edinburgh

Edinburgh, capital of Scotland since the 15th century, is a must-see when going on European vacations. Edinburgh is divided into two main areas: the medieval fortress of Old Town and the New Town with its neoclassical influence that has become a blueprint for European urban planning since the 18th century. The medieval Old Town stretches along a ridge from the Castle to the Palace of Holyrood. Admire the houses of nobles and merchants from the 16th and 17th century, the unique tenement buildings, and many important public structures such as the Canongate Tolbooth and St. Giles Cathedral. To the north of Old Town you will find seven new towns that were built from 1767 to 1890; collectively these towns are known as the Georgian New Town. Integrated with neoclassical buildings are gardens that take advantage of the areas topography. During the Age of Enlightenment, New Town was a major center of thought and learning and remains a cultural and political link to the European mainland. This unique blend of old and new has earned for Edinburgh the distinction of being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
