Usually, a snake boat is manned by four helmsmen, 25 singers and 100-125 oarsmen, who row in unison to the fast rhythm of Vanchipattu (song of the boatman). As the excitement and frenzy hits the crescendo, people on the shores join in the excitement and the thrill of the boat race by crowding around the water's edge and cheer along as the boats cut through the waters in a stunning photo finish. The fast drum beats and boat songs will set off the spectators and the oarsmen into a frenzy of activity.

Typically held during Onam, the harvest festival in August/September, the snake boat race it is a feast for the eyes. Scores of long snake boats accompanied by smaller country crafts participate with zest and zeal as the ores men encourage and cheer their team by beating and drumming and other smaller crafts participate in these events. Feted as the largest team sport in the world, the snake boat races are preceded by colourful water parades.
