Snoring In The Mountains
All snuggled down in the mountains inside my sleeping bag
, it is hard to get to sleep but finally after about an hour blissful sleep does come. I have barely had time to stop wrestling when I heard this horrible noise outside. Because I was half asleep I really couldn't put my finger on the sound or where it was coming from. I only knew it sounded loud and large. I woke my husband who was startled out of a sound sleep. He has the ability to fall deeply asleep anywhere at anytime. I think if we were hanging on the side of a mountain in a rock climbers sling he would hit REM before I hit my pillow. What a great gift. After a couple of seconds of reclaiming his bearings my husband recognized the sound immediately, the husband of the couple we were camping with was snoring. Now, this wasn't just a gentle inhaling and exhaling, this was bone sawing snoring. I don't know how his wife ever gets any sleep at all.
The next morning after what seemed an eternity of night, we met our cheery, well rested friends who asked how we had slept. We muttered something about sleeping pretty well, just a little snoring. Oops, they had forgotten their nasal strips and hoped the sound wasn't too bad and that we were able to sleep. The wife sleeps with earplugs and has for years, so the noise never bothered her at all, it was just us and the rest of the woodland creatures that were unable to get any shuteye. I am sure if there were any bear, wolves or any other predators in the area they had been cleared out for miles, we did take comfort in that thought.
We camp with them one other time, but the snoring was too hard to sleep with. We loved to do day trips with these dear friends, but left the sleeping to themselves. I am glad I don't live with any snorers. Our 16 year old son does sleep across the hall and grinds his teeth and if we forget to have him wear his mouth guard it is almost as bad as snoring but not quite. It does wake me out of deep sleep especially as the morning draws closer, for some reason the grinding intensifies as the night progresses. Snoring, grinding, maybe we should all just wear ear plugs for a great nights sleep but please don't forget the nasal strips and mouth guard when camping.
