If you're looking for the top snorkeling beaches in Hawaii, here's a list to get you started:

Oahu

Makaha Beach Park visit Makaha Beach Park during the summer months for the best snorkeling experience, and gentle currents. There are underwater caverns, tunnels going as deep as 40 feet and arches. In addition to the normal sea life of fish, you'll also enjoy octopuses, green sea turtles, manta, eagle rays and even transiting dolphins when snorkeling here.

Get there: Farrington Highway in Makaha, about 35 miles northwest of Honolulu.

Hanauma Bay because of it's clear and warm waters, Hanauma Bay is one of the more crowded snorkeling beaches in Hawaii. The water is generally calm, and there are many fish to look at while you swim around. If you're new to snorkeling, you can enjoy dozens of fish in just the shallow inner bay, but if you have more experience you might like to swim through a passage in the reef to access Witch's Brew. The Witch's Brew is a more turbulent cove.

Get there: Kalanianaole Highway (Route 72) to Koko Head.

Maui

Molokini Crater accessible only by boat, the Molokini Crater is a partially sunken volcanic crater with amazing visibility. You can swim along the surface of the water and view clearly up to 150 feet below! Many of the fish swimming in this area of Maui are not found anywhere else in the world, and you'll view more than 250 different species.

Get there: 3 miles off the coast of Maui

Kapalua Bay the north side of Kapalua Bay is ideal for beginning snorkelers. There is a protected, sandy beach along the shore. You'll experience a variety of fish species and sea turtles are frequently in the bay.

Get there: Take Highway 30 to Napilihau Street to Napili Kai Beach Club. Watch for the "Shoreline Access" sign and follow the road to the beach.

Big Island

Kealakekua Bay if you're looking for dolphins and sea turtles, you'll want to snorkel on the Big Island of Hawaii at Kealakekua Bay. There are numerous boat tours which will bring you to this secluded marine sanctuary for a snorkeling experience like no other.

Get there: Highway 11, about 17 miles south of Kona

Kauai

Get there: Kaumualii Highway to Route 520 to South Shore

Anini Beach featuring the largest reef on Kauai, the water is quite shallow in many areas of Anini Beach. This allows snorkelers to explore the underwater world in detail along the edge of the reef. Sometimes the outgoing tide on this beach can be strong, but if you're careful Anini Beach can be suitable for beginning snorkelers as well as experienced snorkelers.

Get there: Kuhio Highway to Kalihiwai Road to Anini Road.
