Snow Chains - A Winter Investment?
Drivers in the UK are less used to driving in heavy snow than people in some other countries
. So when it falls, it inevitably causes travel chaos on the roads. However, with the right kit and a bit of driving know-how, getting around in the snow is possible - as long as you take extreme care of course.
One reason that the UK tends to cope less well with snow is that drivers don't usually invest in winter driving kit such as snow chains or winter tyres. In some countries, carrying these items is mandatory, particularly in places such as ski resorts. Some areas even give out fines if you are caught without them.
Be Prepared for Snow
Snow chains may still be a good investment even if you don't venture to the Alps each year. The UK has seen some heavy snow over the past couple of winters. While the main roads tend to be okay, side roads and rural roads can often be left un-gritted, leaving drivers stuck on the streets where they live.
Having a pair of snow chains in the boot could help you get out of a tight spot. They offer extra traction, giving you much better grip and control over the vehicle. Drivers must however ensure they are fitting them on tyres properly - a good tip is to practice putting them on at home a few times before having to do it for real in a blizzard. If you buy them from a reputable retailer they may even offer free fitting advice or at least provide comprehensive instructions from the manufacturer.
Driving with Snow Chains On
After using your chains to get your car moving, keep a steady speed and listen out for any sound that may mean a snow chain has come loose. You may want to check them after 30 metres or so after setting off to ensure they are tight enough. Always take the chains off if you come to a section of road that is not covered by snow - otherwise you could damage your car or the road surface.
Have Fun Safely
With snow chains at the ready, you should be able to throw your sledges or skis in the boot and head out with the family to have some fun in the snow. Just remember that safety is paramount - always heed local travel advice and keep an eye on the forecast. Also don't forget basic winter driving safety - take essentials like flasks, blankets, a shovel and a fully-charged mobile phone. After all it is better to be safe than sorry.
