The snow proved a brilliant tool for the police last year when a car burglar left footprints in the snow that led them right back to his house. Difficult to detect in the harsh conditions, without it he may have gone unnoticed, but police followed the trail and arrested him at his home.

The police are saying that although this was a great result for them, it is a rare one, and you should be vigilant when the weather is bad.

Stuart Chapman, Police Relationship Manager comments; "While many motorists have enjoyed a snow day or two recently, thieves never take a break, so we urge drivers to remain vigilant at all times. It is tempting to leave the keys in the ignition and the engine running in order to quickly heat up the car or defrost the windows, but for opportunistic car thieves, this can act as a green light to steal your vehicle, particularly with the darker mornings and long dark nights of winter. We urge drivers to stay with their car at all times if the keys are in the ignition".

Don't leave the car unattended when waiting for it to defrost, and never leave the keys in the ignition, however short a period of time you plan to stop for. If your car does get stolen and your Car Insurance provider knows you left the keys in the ignition, you may not be covered. If you have a stereo in the car with a removable panel then make sure you detach it and take it out of the car when you leave it. If you have a garage at home, park the car in it. This will not only protect you from criminals but stop you from needing to de ice the car in the morning.
