Snowboard Tips Before You Hit the Hill

Do yourself a favour and learn some basic snowboarding techniques before hitting the powder this winter. Let's be honest, you will still fall a lot - but at least you will be somewhat more confident than you would have been as a complete novice. Here are some snowboarding techniques to get you started.

1. The first step is to learn all the unique and colourful snowboarding slang. This may seem unnecessary, but snowboarding is a highly evolved sport with its own unique culture and patois. If you don't know snowboarding lingo you will never be able to follow your trainer's instructions.Don't give up if you find it hard, eventually you'll pick it up.

2. Having the right clothing and equipment is vital - you won't go far in snowboarding if you don't have the right stuff. The best snowboard clothing should be loose enough to allow free movement but not so loose that it drags on the snow and gets snagged on things. Safety gear is necessary for hands, wrists, head, face and eyes. If you expect to do a lot of tricks then you might even want to consider special protective pants for your tailbone.Whatever your individual needs, the good folks at Quest can set you up.

3. The most important piece of snowboarding equipment is the board itself. Newbies should go for a short board.A quick way to approximate whether the board is of the right length is to see if it has one end reaching your chin with the other end resting on the ground. The next thing to check out after the board's length is the boot bindings. Your boot should fit flush in the binding and not protrude at either the heel or toe.The heels or toes of your boots hanging off the side of the board will hamper your movement on the board.

4. Once you've settled upon your choice of snowboard you then have to decide on what kind of bindings you will use. Snowboard bindings come in two choices: step-ons or strap-ons.There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to snowboard bindings - you should rent some equipment and try it out for yourself before buying. Strap on bindings are more flexible but more difficult to get in and out of, while step-ons are easier to get into but less flexible. Whatever your choice of binding, make sure you have them properly tightened before going on any downhill runs.

On a final note, look out for others on the hill. It is very easy to be focused on what you are doing, and not on where you are going, or going to hit.

Your board is a sharp dangerous piece of equipment so treat it with respect. On a lighter note snowboarding is one of my favorites sports, so get out there and enjoy and be safe.
