Snowboarding Secrets For The Awkward Set
Snowboarding is super-fun, but it takes balance
, timing, and quite a lot of guts. Without a healthy disregard for your own personal safety, no one would ever head down the slope. If you're an amateur or irresponsible, it is easy to get hurt. Here are some secrets to make your first experience more pleasant.
The first thing you'll want to do is check the weather report before you go. Ideally what you want is a blizzard, which means really small class sizes and lots of fluffy snow. If you're just learning, you'll be falling down A LOT, so you want lots of soft snow.
You definitely don't want to go too early in the season, before the snow has laid down a layer thick enough. You also don't want to go too late in the season when the snow is mostly ice because that is a whole lot of no fun to fall on.
Do NOT ask a friend, boyfriend, or girlfriend to teach you. This will end up in frustration, because chances are, they are not trained in how to TEACH, no matter how skillful they may personally be at it.
Do NOT assume you will be able to figure it out on your own. You will not be able to, and will probably hurt yourself and others in the process. That's the hardest part: not smacking into the other people inevitably using the same snow as you.
The best way to learn is from trained professionals, that is, the instructors you find at the ski slopes. Sign up for a class, and don't be daunted by the fact that your classmates are six year olds. If you find that intimidating (or embarrassing) go for a private lesson if you can afford it. Private lessons are not that much more expensive than a class, and the one-on-one instruction can't be beaten.
When you take lessons, either on your own, or in a group, LISTEN to your instructor. Assume the teacher knows more than you and pay attention. Also try to put into practice what they tell you.
If following all the instructions to the letter doesn't send you down a few slopes without falling, ask for a refund or a re-do. The ski resort has a lot invested, so they want you to succeed at your lesson and come back again and again for the season. They will try their best to accommodate you if you put your request in a reasonable manner.
Snowboarding is a huge thrill. Watching the Olympics makes us all want to be a 'Flying Tomato' for a few minutes. Just make sure you approach your snowboarding adventure with a certain amount of caution and preparation. Then go and have a great time!
