So, What is Covert Hypnosis?

You might think that you know about hypnosis. Maybe you have seen a show or a television show where a hypnotist was able to make his subjects do all kinds of funny and embarrassing things. I myself have laughed as hypnotized people barked like a dog and clucked like a chicken.

After watching a particularly good hypnotist show, I found myself wondering if it was real, or were the participants simply actors. I started researching hypnosis and I found out that the answer is yes, hypnosis is very real. I also found that hypnosis is not only used in shows that there is an advanced hypnosis that people use in everyday life without the subjects' knowledge. Needless to say, that I was intrigued by this hypnosis which is called "covert hypnosis".

Unlike the hypnosis that you see in shows, covert hypnosis is done by a trained hypnotist is discreet. It is not publicized on television, nor talked about, but that does not mean that it is not real. So who uses covert hypnosis? Politicians, psychics, advertisers, and cult leaders are the most obvious examples. They use covert hypnosis on a daily basis to influence thoughts and actions. It is how some people are able to convince large numbers of people to do things that everyone else sees as ridiculous. Hitler used covert hypnosis to convince a whole nation to follow his crazy ideals.

Once somebody has mastered covert hypnosis, the uses are almost limitless. But how does it work exactly? In covert hypnosis, the hypnotist influences the subconscious (tells them to do something without telling them to do it). For example, if I simply told you to hop on one foot, of course you would not do it. If we consciously hear a suggestion, we will not be hypnotized by it.

The conscious mind analyzes the commands that we get and allows us to decide whether or not to follow them. When a suggestion comes to the conscious mind that one does not agree with, he or she will decide not to do it. Let's go back to the hop on one foot example. If you consciously hear the command to hop on one foot you will reject it. However, it is possible to plant subtle suggestions in your mind which will trigger these suggestions subconsciously. It then becomes very possible for me to make you hop on one foot.

Of course, as the name implies covert hypnosis is not obvious. The only way that you can be sure that no one is using covert hypnosis on you is to learn the technique for yourself.
