So Who Wants Epoxy Surfboards?

There's a fair old debate about the place of epoxy surfboards in the sports

, with many people dismissing them simply as something produced to fill the demand for cheap surfboards by beginners or people who are only dabbling their feet in the water. Historically they were always considered an inferior material compared to traditional fiberglass surfboards, but over the last few years their manufacture has become more common.

Epoxy surfboards are constructed of a mix of expanded polystyrene foam with fiberglass and an epoxy resin surface. The polystyrene core is a lot lighter than traditional boards " and this lighter density makes this type of board more buoyant than boards of comparable sizes. Your advantage if you're using one of these boards then is that you will be riding higher in the water, making your paddling less effort intensive. To people just starting out, this is an immediate bonus, particularly if they're still building up stamina. The lighter the board, the easier it is to keep getting back up and getting out there to try again when you fall.

The epoxy resin covering of these cheap surfboards is another great advantage, particularly when you're starting out and getting used to the dimensions of your board. That toughened coating is going to give you the confidence not to worry about the odd bump and knock " either while you're out catching breakers or while you're in transit with the board mounted on the roof.

By contrast, the traditional board is made of a mix of polyurethane foam, fiberglass and a polyester resin. More experienced surfers prefer the feel of the resin under foot as it doesn't feel as rigid. The extra flex in the board makes the traditional board feel more responsive as a result. The denser foam mix in its core also makes the board sit lower in the water. The advantage for the more experienced surfer is that the board then streams through choppier water much more smoothly. It's harder to paddle, but then your stamina and technique will compensate for that, allowing you to take advantage of the different characteristics of this type of board as opposed to cheap surfboards.

In general then, the division between these two types of board (without getting into long discussions about balsa constructions or different board shapes like Eggs, Fish or Guns) is that if you've been using traditional polyurethane boards (also known as PU boards), you're more likely to want to stick with them. On the other hand, the lightness and toughness of these lighter boards are going to be far more appealing while you're starting out. Investing in your first few boards is going to be a steep enough learning process without worrying about it getting damaged at the airport and that little extra help with buoyancy is going to do wonders for your confidence that really can't be underestimated. So in answer to our first question " if you're still learning your Long Board from your Tri-Fin and your Mini Tanker from your Malibu, the person who wants epoxy surfboards is you!
