As you can see, it would need to be something that you are really serious about in order to take that first step. Still, the costs associated with digitizing today are minimal compared to what they would have been twenty years ago.

In the 1980s, establishing yourself in embroidery digitizing would have cost as much as $100,000 because the software itself was so expensive. Not only are prices much lower today, but the information necessary to become a good digitizer is much more available than it was in the days when you had to invest years in an apprenticeship.

It is important to understand embroidery before you can learn digitizing. The reason is that when you conceptualize a sewing machine doing something, it must be possible. Problems that might arise can more easily be determined as either a sewing problem or a programming one. This does not mean that both can't be learned at the same time because it can take much longer to become astute at digitizing if you wait to master embroidery first.

Learning to digitize efficiently generally takes much longer than it does to learn embroidery. Mastering software for digitizing can be quite a challenge for the person with no former experience. Depending on computer savvy and ability, the learning curve can be a long one.

If you are prepared to invest both your money and your time, custom embroidery design may be in your future. Keep in mind that the competition is high in the Custom Embroidery Digitizing business and profits can be very low at the start.
