Soaring Lead Levels Kill In Nigeria 160 Dead After Gold Miners Unearth Toxin

tragedy of "unprecedented proportions" concerning Lead poisoning of several hundred of its citizens recently. Over 160 Nigerians were killed due to lead poisoning caused when villagers started digging for gold but encountered large deposits of Lead as well. It has been known for a long time that in this area gold could be be dug up but it wasn't until recently when the price of gold began to soar that the villagers headed into the bush to dig for the gold. When they brought the gold back to their villages and huts they also brought the Lead along with it.

Once the villagers returned with rocks that contained Gold they had to break them apart to help release the Gold. When they did this and when they handles the rocks the Lead was absorbed into their bodies causing many to become sick and a large number to die. The Lead has almost saturated their living areas. Dust containing high concentration of Lead was every where, and children were playing in common areas loaded with Lead dust. "The level of exposure was so high that most blood samples were off the scale on lead-screening machines". Lead is a very powerful neurotoxin that can cause ADHD, poor memory, hearing loss, aggressive behavior, learning disabilities, behavioral defects, seizures, brain and nervous system problems and death.

This is an extremely sad situation. The villagers were just trying to dig up gold to make money and better their lives but only found misery and death. The U.S, needs to take the lead in helping to educate the rest of the world about the dangers of toxins including heavy metals like Lead, cleaning up toxins and promoting and making testing readily available.
