A business success begins with its people, according to Doug Donovan, president of Soaring Eagle Enterprises, (http://www.aracopy.com), a consulting firm with a unique training angle.
"Companies are learning, particularly in a service economy, that the biggest differentiation in a competitive market is their people. The more enlightened organizations try to align work with peoples gifts and talents and provide an environment for learning, growth, creativity, teamwork and contribution. They respect the dignity of each person. They engage the people in creating the organization they want to work with and to continuously improve it.
"Wise companies know that action comes from emotional engagement," Donovan continues. "They realize the importance of communication, stories, traditions, symbols and a sense of togetherness. They have experienced that commitment comes from mutual caring."
Donovan cites one company's creative use of the power of symbols and traditions as an example. The well-known training company adopted Mickey Mouse as its symbol. They flew a Mickey Mouse flag. Their bus drivers wore Mickey Mouse jackets. Mickey was everywhere - but what did it mean? Each month there was a company meeting to present Mickey Mouse watches to employees who recently completed 30 days with the company. The group that received their watches in the prior month presented watches to the current recipients. As they presented the watches they told the recipients that they were receiving the watches for three reasons.
First, it was to remind them that they are supposed to have fun at work. There would be times when they would need this reminder. Second, that the company is a creative organization and it lived or died by its creativity and that a lot of that creativity came out of our childlike self. It was a reminder to be open, not take yourself too seriously and bring out that childlike imagination and sense of wonder. Finally, it seems to make more sense to receive a watch when you are beginning a career rather than when you ending your career.
"It was very important to receive your watch, a symbol of belonging, and to become a living part of the culture," Donovan notes.
In a similar fashion, Soaring Eagle Enterprises works to integrate an organization's mission with the human beings within the organization, according to Donovan. "We often start with strategic planning and connecting people to the mission, purpose, values and goals of the company. We are seeking organizational and individual effectiveness." Soaring Eagle Enterprises provides a wide range of management consulting to organizations throughout the world, including strategic and business planning, change management, creative problem solving, engaging people, story telling, motivational speaking, learning and development systems and executive coaching.
"People need guiding principles to fully engage them in their work," says Donovan. "They need something to believe in and to focus upon in making decisions, working together and serving the customer. In this age of empowerment they must have these principles to guide their decision making and action.
"The most successful organizations know there has to be a sense of integrity between what they say and what they do, Donovan continues. He mentions that leadership must "walk the talk. We have experienced companies where this is not the case," says Donovan. "The senior management said one thing, but their actions said something completely different. It doesn't take long for people to see this disparity and become disillusioned or cynical."
Donovan also believes strongly in individual development, noting that happiness comes from finding purpose and meaning in your life. "During our early years we are busy growing up, getting an education, starting a career and raising a family. At some point, normally around mid-life we pull back and begin to ask questions like: Why am I here; What am I supposed to do with my life; Who and what are important...and why; What would be worthwhile...add meaning to my life; How can I make a difference? In all of our busyness and with all of our doing, many of us have forgotten how to be, we have forgotten that we are humans being."
"There are so many people searching for the answers," says Donovan. "What some people are beginning to realize is that the purpose they seek, exists inside each of us and only needs to be detected. A sense of purpose is never just handed to us. We get it by deciding to have it." He talks about gifts and talents and mentions how purpose normally aligns with our God given gifts and talents.
He believes that we all have received gifts and talents but we are often not fully aware of them or don't give them much value because they are so natural and easy for us. "We are normally happiest when we are using these gifts or talents, being more of ourselves," he concludes.
Donovan encourages his clients "to dare to dream and follow their dreams. It isn't always easy. It takes courage. It normally involves taking risks. It involves learning, growing, becoming."It helps to have a sense of playfulness and fun to sustain your effort. In the process there is the feeling of being what or who you were meant to be. There is a sense of being fully human and fully alive."
His beliefs are reflected in a favorite Henry David Thoreau quote, "If a man advances confidently in the direction of his dreams to live the life he has imagined, he will meet with success unexpected in common hours." "It is easy to hesitate, to sacrifice our dream to self doubt," Donovan reflects, adding "We often need to rediscover our courage, support each other and sometimes, get a little push. We need to remember that we can't fail at being ourselves."
