Social And Affective Strategies For Speaking And Oral Proficiency

In the field of education, the so-called social and affective strategies are gaining wider acceptance

. Okay, what are these strategies? These strategies involve social interaction like immersing in culture (social strategy) and rewarding oneself (affective strategy).

So what do these have to do with speaking and oral proficiency? As our intuition can guess, these are very much interrelated. It may seem obvious that being able to interact and feel good about oneself indeed can help our speaking skills to be better. Research has provided proof supporting that claim that explicit strategy instruction with regard to these strategies can indeed help improve one's speaking and oral proficiency.

Explicit instruction is vital. Self-taught strategies may not be reliable because the strategies can be poorly done in doing so. A qualified teacher can help the students perform these strategies with precision. So even if you are not a student, you can learn these strategies from qualified sources of information. It is important for these sources to be qualifies, otherwise, you would simply be teaching yourself in the end.

It is not that our capacity for self-learning is unreliable. It is however true, that we learn better through imitation. The teachers can teach you the social strategies with their interaction with you as students. If you are learning by yourself, ask your friends to practice the strategies with you.

Affective strategies are one of the hottest topics in educational research nowadays. It seems that only during this recent era do the experts truly understand the value of emotions and affectivity with regards to learning. Experience of course teaches us that it is better to learn when we are in the mood. So for speaking and oral skills, the mood established is by relaxation techniques. Learning how to control your breathing for example can diminish anxiety that causes a person to be derailed in learning and practicing how to speak.

With both these kinds of strategies, we are applying Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences. Our inter personal and intra personal intelligences are practiced and applied in such a way that these facilitate our learning. Ultimately, it is a matter of practice, and knowledge of these strategies can indeed be used for all kinds of skills. However, these strategies are much more deeply connected with our oral and speaking skills. Why?

The reason is these skills facilitate communication, and as we learn in philosophy, we do communicate our own selves. Thus, how we interact and feel about ourselves are vital to facilitating these skills.
