Social Media Day And Social Media Marketing

Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, officially named June 30 as Social Media Day

, as proclaimed by the city's mayor Dean Forntin. The movement was initiated by a member of Idea Wave, who approached Councillor Chris Coleman and had the day proclaimed. The story was picked up by Mashable, the famous social media online magazine, who noted that Victoria was the first city in the world to officially proclaim this type of event.

To celebrate the day, a gathering was held at the Bengal Room in the famous Fairmont Empress hotel, an icon in Victoria's inner harbour. Approximately 80 people attended, largely from the city's "Twitter" community. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet and mingle with other influential social media users.

Stikky Media, a Victoria local search engine optimization and social media marketing company, decided to contribute to Social Media Day by encouraging others to acknowledge the power of these social mediums. They organized a Facebook contest, encouraging others to "like" the fan page (http://www.facebook.com/stikkymedia) and post on the wall how social media has positively impacted their lives. At the end of the contest, July 22, 2010, all participants will have their names entered in a draw for a chance to win an iPad.

Three days into the contest, there have been several entries, all of which tell an interesting story reflecting on people's personal experiences with social media. The most popular type of entry consists of participants sharing how social media has allowed them to connect with long lost friends and contacts, and stay in touch and share pictures with loved ones who reside far away.
