Here's are some tried-and-true techniques to making sure you're getting the most out of your social media channels:

1. Set up a Facebook page in addition to your personal profile: Since your business is your art, you may not want to mix your personal life with your professional business. Setting up a Facebook fan page will let you connect with your fans and potential customers without having to censor what you say in your personal life.


2. Develop a custom Facebook tab. You don't have to lose your brand just because you're on Facebook. Create a custom Facebook tab on your fan page that can showcase some of your artwork to your friends without them ever leaving Facebook. This gives you even more opportunity to put yourself in front of your audience.

3. On the same note, make sure your Twitter background is reflective of yourself and your art. Add a few thumbnails of some of your recent artwork and make sure you include the URLs of where else people can get in touch with you.

4. Be communicative. People don't want to interact with just an automated account. They want to know that they're reaching the root of the artist. More and more, people want to know who's behind the business, and as an artist, you want to make sure you're connecting. Respond to fan comments on Twitter or Facebook and make yourself as available as possible.

5. Create a blog. A blog is the best way to give your fans a closer look into your life as an artist. Write posts about different tools and resources you've find that makes creating easier, industry news, or your work process in creating a certain artwork. Tumblr is the best platform for an image blog and gives you a wide range of functionality and personalization.

6. Keep your blog updated! Nothing looks worse to your fans than going to a blog and seeing the last post was months ago. You'll lose your reliability and reputation, which are both hard things to get back.
