Select something that there's already a lot of emotion about. Watch tendencies and if you spot something that is beginning to gain some attention in particular social groups, it may be something that takes off and gets widespread awareness. Use these things.

Individually you will be trying hard to create waves related to what you try to promote but what you'll finish up making is a small ripple. A good marketer will see the tsunami's being created by the larger media outlet and will employ a marketing tactic that takes advantage on the great stir they form on the bigger social circles laying on the beach.
