Social Media Marketing With Twitter
"Internet Marketing" has really lead itself to become "Social Media Marketing" in my opinion
. Unless you are using Google AdWords, placing ads, or publishing articles or videos, you are most likely on a social media website. This Web 2.0 is the new avenue and very exciting in terms of its creativity and low cost. The three main social media outlets that come to mind for most are Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. I will share some of the secrets I've learned right here! To start, I'm offering some tips on leveraging Twitter for free leads to your site or product:
1) Market your profile to who you really are - Take time to edit the background and profile pic. Do not use a logo for your profile pic as Twitter is such a simplistic site that the few areas for personalization should be fully utilized. Choose a "nice smiley picture of your face" as Gregg Davison puts it. Your Bio should also give a snapshot of who you are, not just what you're selling (if that is the case). People want to get to know you and your personality. They will cruise over one such as..."Internet marketing success, wealth creation coach, online entrepreneur that works from home. I love time and money, and the beach..." I mean it may grab a few, but the more I connect on Twitter, the more I see that. There has to be SOMETHING unique about you!
2) Find people to follow - At first as a new user, you simply follow interesting people (usually celebrities) and are not a part of the "conversation" that is Twitter. You must also follow users that have similar interests to you. Why? Because you might learn something from them, AND you then want to follow let's say 5 pages of their followers. Doing so means you are introducing yourself to targeted leads who themselves have already taken the steps to follow someone like you. But remember, don't lead with marketing, just connect!
3) Get followers - This comes naturally with Step 2 above. When you follow people, they usually (if they're interested) will follow you back. If they don't after several days or weeks, go back and unfollow them to clean up your ratio. Now that you have an audience, your tweets on your great content are now much more effective. Be sure to always follow back someone who follows you as well, or they may leave you (see earlier).
4) Make the connection - Once someone follows you, you will want to send them a message, or DM in Twitter language. Again make it something to start the conversation, don't just hit them with a sales pitch or link. Turn off. You can include a link, but lead with a question or some other conversation starter. Now once you get a lot of people following you all day everyday, you will want to automate the process a bit. I have found Social Oomph to be very helpful in that regard. There you can add your account and as mentioned, automatically "follow back followers" and send a saved DM to anyone who does follow you. I highly recommend this!
5) Lastly - Have fun with your little 140 character posts. Don't always market and sell. People again are turned off by this. The rule I've learned is a 80/20 rule. 80% real life content (daily activities or interesting happenings, quotes, links to enjoyable content) and 20% marketing of you and your products.
