With the advent of social media like Facebook, Twitter, texting and email, there doesnt seem to be a need for actual face-to-face human interaction anymore. Weve become humanoids with technological gadgets permanently attached to our fingertips. While social media has dramatically diminished our reliance on human contact, it has also created a new slew of social conventions that many are unaware of. Old and young alike have fallen victim to the most common social media mishaps and ultimate no-nos. The next time you decide to drunkenly log into your Facebook account at 3am to talk about your crazy night of poker chip sets and strippers refer to my social media etiquette tips below. Dating and Technology I should hope this is obvious if you are over the age of 14, but never ever dump your boyfriend or girlfriend via technology. There is nothing more impersonal or insulting than ending a 4-year marriage with a nondescript text message. Sarcasm and Emoticons Remember that social media lacks connotation, so unless you know the person youre emailing well, avoid using sarcasm. Misunderstandings are bound to occur here and there, so you may want to throw in an emoticon every once in a while, just be frugal about it or youll come off as a smiling fool. Drinking and Social Media Never ever use any form of social media when under the influence of alcohol. You will undoubtedly do something regrettable that will haunt you come morning. Texting in Public Stop conversation-texting while out on a date or out with friends. Just like talking on the phone for a long time in front of a friend is rude, so is incessant texting.
