Social Media is an amazingly affordable marketing strategy that is easy to use to grow your business and your sphere of influence and authority. Networking through social media sites can be done efficiently if you have a plan in place and a self-regulated time limit.
How can you best utilize an hour each day of social media without getting lost in wasted time and useless browsing?
First, set an alarm. Have a time limit and stick to it. If you want to play on Facebook, do it after vital work hours not during your productive time. I suggest a power hour not a play hour.
Before beginning, I am assuming that you have a Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn account. I also expect that your profiles are complete and up to date. If not, make time to reassess all your profiles, polish them and make sure all your links are functional.
I suggest starting your hour with LinkedIn and Twitter before moving onto Facebook. Facebook tends to be the most addictive and the most likely to distract you.
So for a 10 minute segment on LinkedIn, check your messages and invitations and respond to important ones and clean up all of them. Make a post, and comment or like a few other people's posts. Invite someone you met yesterday or a person who you respect to connect with you on LinkedIn.
I am a big fan of writing recommendations on LinkedIn. Who could you recommend today? It only takes a few minutes to make someone's day! Little actions like writing recommendations regularly add up over time to make your profile amazing. Write at least one recommendation a week. Pick a day of the week such as Wednesday and spend a bit more time to send out that recommendation. On a regular day of LinkedIn, spend about 10 minutes. Add an extra 5 minutes if you write a recommendation.
Spend the next 10 minutes on Twitter. Check for direct messages and respond if necessary. Engage in some conversations or retweet. Post a message with a link. Be interesting and informative. Look up key people in your industry or network and follow them and engage in conversation with them.
Start your Facebook segment with focus. Begin the first 5 minutes looking at the home page news feed and making some comments to several posts for no more than 5 minutes. Then move on to checking and responding to any messages and notifications that need a response and spending no more than 5 minutes doing so. Also clean up friend requests. Save time and click on "Ignore All" for invitations and events unless you have time to do a quick scan.
Can you invite someone you just met to be your friend? Are there some people who are leaders and movers and shakers that you could also connect and learn from? Not only ask them to be your friend, but study their profile for a few minutes to see if you can learn from them.
Before leaving Facebook, make a post on your personal page and your professional page. Mix posts with interesting facts, links or questions that hopefully prompt a response and engagement of your readers. You can always add an inspirational quote or a book, blog or movie review. Show a bit of your personality at times and keep upbeat and even a little playful with good taste.
When that timer rings, stop and move on to important tasks of your day. If time permits, come back and play on Facebook later but only as a reward for a productive work day!
Consistent interaction on social media adds up to more people in your network and more people who know, like and trust you. It takes time and discipline but the rewards of persistent effort are there for those who use this powerful tool.
