It seems so obvious, but many people give out this information without every really thinking about it and it doesn't take much for fraudsters to steal your identity. Giving away just your date of birth and your full name could be the start of a financial nightmare. So make sure you have checked your privacy settings and never, ever give anyone your personal details

Sadly, 1.8 Million people suffer the consequences of identity theft each year. Remember if someone steals your identity, they can take the money you have as well as taking out borrowing in your name, leaving you in a significant amount of debt.

Mistake 2: Letting everyone know what you have been doing

Everyone loves to remember a good night out or a crazy weekend, but do you really want potential employers knowing what you have been up to too?

Lots of people will happily plaster social media sites with graphic descriptions and photographs of them and their friends in less than flattering situations for the entertainment of others. Although these descriptions and photographs can be absolutely hilarious, a potential employer may feel that the great first impression you made at your interview is not the real you after they have seen what you get up to in your own time.

We all love to let other people know when we are about to jet away on holiday. We all like to tell people, how stressful we are finding packing, exactly how long it is until we go or at the very least where we are going. In fact, some people even update their status while they are away so their friends, colleagues and family can see what a great time they are having. In principle there is absolutely nothing wrong with this, except that if you're not careful you might be letting everyone know exactly where you are.

With the invention of social media sites our use of technology has been taken to a whole new level and this includes the way in which criminals use technology. Wannabe burglars search these sites in the hope that someone is silly enough to allow them to learn of where they live. As soon as these people become aware that your property is empty, they may decide to use the opportunity to break into your home and take your possessions. So before you let everyone know where you are, think again.
