Social Media in Travel
As social media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and TripAdvisor become more and more popular folks are going to them for insight into their next travel destination. It seems that a real number of individuals are heading to these sites for experienced advice. It's a bit unsettling to me because if you're not looking for truly experienced travelers' advice, who are your alternatives? Realistically, you're listening to Mr Walters and his annoying trip to Dublin and you may not go because Mr Walters had a negative experience when in fact, Dublin is a great city to visit.
The problem is that one doesn't always find fair and balanced suggestions. Reviews can vary wildly from user to user. I know I've been down this road before, but it's worth saying again: If you don't know someone's background, their review could be quite unbalanced from the facts of the destination, accommodations, and/or amenities. My point is that if you're one of these people, you should be wary of what you read on these sites. Take each comment with a grain of salt or contact the reviewer directly to get a more in-depth look into who they are and if you are on the same plane. If you find that they you and the user are very different, you can perhaps use that to your advantage: just do the opposite of what the reviewer suggests. Your other option is to ignore the reviewer altogether, which is what I would suggest.
The World Travel Market did some research on this issue and found the following data: 36% of all internet users looking for travel information use social media to get their information. It's not close to a majority of folks, but it's far from being no one. After a few years that will probably go up. If you're one of these reviewers who use any of the sites listed about, keep in mind what you're providing. No longer are you simply yelling into the ether about the stuff that bothers you. You are now providing a service, so be fair to your readers; try to be reasonable. If not, you're simply be irresponsible.
If you're looking for accommodations that aren't inundated with hearsay and conjecture, check out MetroFlats! They offer great vacation rentals to stay in that you will always be happy with.
