Society Finches - History and Breeding

Americans know them as Society Finches because of their flocking tendencies. They are rarely, if ever found in pairs or singles. Outside of the states, they are known by different names. In Germany, they are referred to as Japanese Mvchen Finches and elsewhere they are called Bengalese Finches. However, no matter what you call them, they are all the same birds. These wonderful little birds have one thing that makes them stand out among all other finches. This bird exists only in captivity. This is not because they are extinct in the wild, but because they were created in captivity.

The origin of these wonderful birds is not known, but there are theories. The most common theory is that Society Finches were first bred in China or Japan. However, because they are such an old species, there is no proven recording of the first of this species. While no one knows where they were originally bred, most authorities do agree that they are descended from the Asian Striated and Sharptail Mannikins. This is a bird that is rarely seen, and yet they are nearly the twin of Society Finches. No matter where these feathered friends came from, they are still one of the most common finches to breed and keep today.

Society Finches are available in several different mutations and colors. Some of these diminutive birds are being bred with crests while others are being bred with frilled feathers covering their bodies. Being bred purely in captivity, the varieties available in this pet are too numerous to count. While most of them come in various shades of brown, and from nearly black to cream, you can also find them with pure white and pure black markings. Occasionally a breeder will even get a Tricolor that includes chocolate, fawn and white all on the same bird.

Breeding Society Finches is easier than any other breed of finch. In fact, it is sometimes harder to stop them from breeding than it is to get them started. The only tricky part to breeding this bird is identifying the males from the females. Unlike the majority of birds, these little birds have no distinguishing markings to tell the difference between the males and the females. Instead, a breeder must rely on the behavior of the birds. Male Society Finches will sing and display whenever they are introduced to a new bird. While this will not tell you if the new bird is male or female, it will tell you that the singing bird is most likely male.

Living in large flocks, these birds tend to roost together. As many birds as can fit will squeeze into one nest box. The eggs can suffer from neglect when this happens. To prevent that, it is suggested that the birds be kept in pairs to promote healthy mating. The potential breeder can also keep them in trios or quads if they are not positive of the male-female pairings. No matter how they go about the mating, Society Finches are easy to breed and easy to keep as pets.
