Sodium Laureth Sulphate - Cancer Causing Chemical Or Great Foaming Agent?

What Is Sodium Laureth Sulphate?

What Is Sodium Laureth Sulphate?

Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLS) is a Surfactant commonly used as a Foaming Agent in detergents, shampoos, toothpastes, etc. It is also used as a cleanser and emulsifier in a wide range of cosmetic products. It is a key component in most of the products requiring a Foaming Agent as it generates a large amount of Foam at a very low relative cost.

Surfactant: Surfactants are compounds which lower the surface tension of a liquid.

The Rumors Of Being Carcinogens

Sodium Laureth Sulphate, despite its popularity, has been alleged to cause cancer. The Internet soon became rife with rumors that the use of products containing Sodium Laureth Sulphate (which would be almost all of the detergent and cosmetics products) could lead to cancer. This resulted in frantic searches by the consumers looking for a confirmation or refutation by any reputed organization.

What Do The Experts Say?

Toxicology reports by the U.S. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), NTP (National Toxicology Program) and IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) support the conclusions of the CTFA (Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association) and the American Cancer Society that state that Sodium Laureth Sulphate is not a carcinogen.

However, it has been found that Sodium Lauryl Sulphate contains low levels of 1,4-dioxane which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency classifies as a probable human carcinogen. Though the low amount of 1,4-dioxane present in Sodium Laureth Sulphate is not harmful, however extended exposure may cause cancer towards the later stages of usage. Thus, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration advise that the 1,4-dioxane be removed from Sodium Laureth Sulphate before it is used in the detergents, cosmetics, etc.

What Do The Consumers Say?

The consumers continue using the products containing Sodium Laureth Sulphate but not all of them do so without any doubts. This is especially because the experts and the relevant organizations around the world have stated that the 1,4-dioxane present in Sodium Laureth Sulphate may cause cancer even while advising that Sodium Laureth Sulphate can be safely used in the consumer products.

The ambiguity over the hazard of using products containing Sodium Laureth Sulphate has not affected the sales of the products. The rumors of Sodium Laureth Sulphate being a carcinogen did raise a few tensed enquiries. But with no confirmation coming from the authorities, most of the consumers have laid their trust on the experience of having safely used the products for extended lengths of time.
