Software Development Process
Software development is a process in which software is developed through successive phases in a particular order
. The process includes writing of codes along with the preparation of requirements and objectives, the design of what is to be coded and a confirmation that proves that the developed software has fulfilled all the requirements.
Earlier, the management and technical personnel used to implement their experience and intuition in their fields to develop a new systems or products. But the complexity of modern systems and computer products gave rise to the need of some orderly development process and hence came into being the systems development method.
Following are the phases of a software development process:
1. Identification of required software
2. Analysis of the software requirements
3. Detailed specification of the software requirements
4. Software design
5. Programming
6. Testing
7. Maintenance
The development of commercial software generally happens due to the demand in the market place where as an enterprise software development is generally developed due to a need or a problem within the enterprise environment.
The system is evaluated and its drawbacks are taken note of. Interviewing system users and support personnel helps in acquiring this information. The new system requirements and identified and defined. The main point is to overcome the deficiencies in the existing system. A specific proposal for improvement is created and the proposed system is designed.
Plans related to the physical construction, hardware, operating systems, programming, communications and security issues are laid out. Then the new and improved system is developed. The new components and programs are required to be obtained and installed. The users who will be using the system are trained in its use and the performance of the system is tested. Any fault or any changes that need to be done in the system are done at this stage.
The system is finally set and ready to use. There are various ways to do this. The new system can be phased in, according to application or location and over a period of time, the old system is replaced. In a few cases, it is advisable to shut down the old system completely and put the new system to use all at once. And when the system is finally set up and has been in use for a wile, it should be test and evaluated time and again. Maintenance should be given a priority and the users should keep up to date information regarding the latest modification and procedures of the system.
