Software Licensing In 3 Types Of Virtualized Asian Network Operations
There is currently plenty of data to support the hype around server virtualization in Asian network operations
. Most businesses are convinced of the benefits, and have either converted to a virtualized environment or are in the process of doing so. However, current software licensing is based on an understanding of usage as based on physical servers or single physical machines. It is not designed specifically with virtualized Asian network infrastructure in mind. So, while the benefits of virtualization itself are clear, the way organizations should handle software licensing aren't necessarily. Today we check out how to determine your obligations and rights regarding licensing with virtualized information technology infrastructure.
There are several major challenges for information technology consultants in determining how software can be used in a virtual environment, not the least of which is the fact that usage statements from software creators themselves don't use the language necessary to clearly specify what is allowed. Most companies do not clearly state whether a license applies to a single physical machine, whether it counts operating systems to which the program is installed, or whether both physical and virtual devices are counted. Although rare, some applications are also licensed per processor - and where a single license may be required to run an application on one physical machine, up to 16 licenses could be needed to run an application on two virtual machines each with dual processor cores.
Additionally, the fact that virtual machines can be re-assigned to different physical machines means that license agreements are even less clear on the handling protocols for virtualized Asian network infrastructure.
Licensing Issues in 3 Virtualization Scenarios
There are three main types of virtualization in Asian network operations, and the software licensing implications differ for each. These are examined below.
Application virtualization as an Asian communications solution
In this type of virtualization, applications follow different users around to whichever virtual machine they occupy on the physical server. However, given that most software licenses are granted per device, this type of usage could quickly become non-compliant. Obviously it is not an ideal situation, however the best that organizations can do is to assign a per-device licensed piece of software to a particular machine.
Desktop virtualization as an Asian communications solution
Desktop virtualization has many benefits in technical support , data security and accessibility of data. However, the issue from application virtualization of having a per-device license only for software still exists.
Server virtualization as an Asian communications solution
This is the type of virtualization most widely used and best understood in business. Again, you will need to clarify within the software's license agreement whether a device is counted as a physical device, a virtual device, or a processor. Information technology consultants see software designers leaning towards a 'per virtual device' model, and we may even see a per-user model of software licensing enacted in the future with different business network security models.
