Solar Farm Designs For Different Locations

The growing need for electricity has created various ways in harvesting energy

. Though, harvesting has been a problem because of shortage in natural resources; People found a way to use the resources readily available in the nature. Ingeniously, they created machines and devices which will assist them in harvesting renewable energy from inexhaustible source like the sun, winds or waterfalls. One decent example of these devices is the solar panels.

Solar panels are rectangular shaped platforms that harvest solar power from the sun to produce electricity. It converts the solar energies into direct electrical currents. It is constructed with semiconductors that exhibit photovoltaic effects (current converting capability). Photovoltaic effect is the result of light photons stirring electrons into higher grade of energy, making them act as carriers of electric currents.

Solar panels are used dominantly in countries or places experiencing hot climate. Large number of solar panels is usually grouped or fixated in one setting to facilitate more energy collection. This large group of solar panels is called Solar Farms.

Solar Farm is the collection of solar panels fixated in one setting. Solar farms vary on its different designs and structural engineering. Solar farm design basically depends on the plant location of the solar farm.


Free Field Design is located in a wide brown-field location wherein land life is non-existent. It is also the most common solar farm design utilized today. It is constructed with ground mounted support system in which the solar panels stand in thick metal structures and buried firmly on the ground. It can be designed in three different approaches such as fixed arrays, dual axis or single axis trackers. These approaches usually affect increased solar output of the panels.

Fixed arrays design is the type which proposes all solar panels should be inclined in one specific and carefully calculated direction to attain optimum sun output. Most solar panels are normally inclined at the equator since this is where sun is concentrated. Topographic and climate changes sometimes affect the position of inclination of solar panels. Though, this design is more expensive and complicated; it only increases the solar output by few percent.

Dual axis arrays design is the type which proposes all solar panels should be pointed at the sun. Since the earth is technically revolving around the sun, the solar panels are constructed back-to- back with both panels facing the sides. It is commonly utilized in subtropical regions where the sun rays differ throughout the year. The increased solar output is 30%.


Single axis trackers design is the type which proposes all solar panels should be planted horizontal and never be adjusted to any seasons. The increased solar output is 15%.

Building-mounted Design is the solar farm design planted on buildings. It is the unconventional way of manufacturing electricity for urban areas. If arranged well, it may answer to the whole power necessity of the building.

Aircraft Design is the solar farm design made for satellites and stations in space. Space astronauts use the solar energy to provide electricity in their space stations. The solar panels are planted on the wings of the satellites/space stations.
