Soldiers Have Disability Allowances Slashed
Imagine you sign up for the army to fight for queen and country; you begin active
service in Iraq at a time when the biggest threat to troops is roadside bombs and suicide bombers. Even with all your training the worst happens and you get injured in the field. You would expect that same country to offer the very best support they have to offer for being prepared to die for your country right? Wrong.
The ministry of defence has made cut backs that will leave the worst affect soldiers whose injuries will affect them being able to work again 3,000 pounds a year worse off than before. These soldiers already have a barrage of adjustments to be made to the way they live and even mental scaring due to the disabilities and scenes of violence they have encountered in the field. Now they have to deal with living in poverty as well because payments won't cover the treatment and disability equipment they need and due to their injuries won't be able to get jobs to pay for these extra items.
To put the saving the MOD will be saving by implementing these cuts they currently spend 34 million pounds on this category of injured soldier one firth of the 1.5 billion paid out in benefits to heroin & cocaine addicts each year.
Soldiers compensation is assessed in terms of their 3 main injuries, this way if soldiers who have multiple injuries then there is a scale of what compensation they receive, for instance if one severe injury is sustained then 100% of the payout will be paid the second injury goes down 30% if that was the main injury and 10% for the 3rd. Multiple injuries are the most common especially in the current increase in road side bomb injuries as the nature of the blast certainly will incur more than one injury.
Soldiers are left with nothing else then to appeal against their compensation in the courts one instance of this was Ben Parkinson, 25, suffered 37 injuries, including brain damage and the loss of both legs. He initially received 152,000 pounds. After a campaign by his mother, this was raised to 546,000 pounds. But if this had been taken to a civil trial top lawyers believe this amount could have increased to 3 Million.
Our armed services need much better support from the country they sign up to protect, they should be treated fairly by the government and not swept aside once they are no longer of use to the army. Their rehabilitation should be paramount and re adjustment back into civilian life with their disabilities should be made effortless with the support and finances they need to re adjust.
