Solving The Problems With Rich Media
Search engines are currently incapable of reading images
. Don't think they're not working on this; they are, but for the moment its something many people fall victim to. They use images instead of text for their websites, and as such give Google and other engines less chance to know what their sites are about.
So whats the point of all this? Well, my point is that just because a person can read, listen, or see something that is on your website, that doesn't mean a search engine can do the exact same thing. I've come across many websites where people use images from their print collateral in place of text web pages, and you know? Google and other engines don't have the first clue what that page is about. I've seen embedded copies of interviews from the radio and other types of audio content that don't have anything more than the title of the audio program from the time it was aired. And the search engines have absolutely no clue what that audio program talks about.
So, how do we go about helping the search engines to know what all of our audio, video, and pictures are about? Well, first of all, if you're going to use a picture, make sure not to forget about the alt and title tags for it. On our site we have 3 images right below our header and the search engines don't have any idea what they are as far as the rest of our site is concerned. At least, they wouldn't, except that we've TOLD them what they mean by using title and alt tags. So even though the search engines are aware of those images, they don't know what they're about, much less what they mean for your site, but they can read the text you give them in the HTML. Also, if you use those tags it can help any visitors that stop by your website through a mobile device or who might have a visual impairment.
When you offer video and audio content to your users, its a good idea to offer up a written transcript of that content as well. Search engines won't know what the video/audio is about, but they can read the text in your transcript, and then send you traffic that is looking for that very topic. The transcript can also be beneficial in that it can allow your visitors to choose how they want to digest your information, based on their personal format preference. Very often people don't want, or can't play your content because they happen to be in a more public place. Having your content available in written format lets them access your information regardless.
