Some Advice On Snowplow Landscaping
In most places in the United States, it is the time for your landscaping to sleep
. No more planting or harvesting once the snow falls.
Your lawn mower is now safely napping somewhere on your property, settling in for a long winter hibernation. All the garden tools are put away.
But there is still a force of nature that requires yard work in the winter - snow. It gets everywhere and usually needs to be moved to get around.
But part of landscaping your yard in the winter is snow removal. We all need to do it to get out of our driveways.
There are different kinds of snow removal equipment, and we will be reviewing them here.
The very first option that most people choose is using snow shovels to remove the snow from walks and driveways. This method is not recommended with people who have weak backs.
Kids are more difficult to find to pay to shovel your walks, but if you have children of your own, that can be a great way to have them earn some allowance. Or there may be a child in your neighborhood that wants to earn some money.
Ergonomic shovels are good for people with strong backs, even if they are out of shape; if your health is not at risk, shoveling snow is a great workout for your upper body. Ergonomic shovels are shaped to assist the natural movement and shape of your back as you bend and twist to remove snow.
You can also purchase a snow blower as your snow removal equipment. They can be a costly purchase and they do require maintenance. You must also find a place to store the machine; this can be hard for those without garages.
Buying a snow blower may make your life easier, but one thing people sometimes misunderstand is that a snow blower will only remove the snow, not slush or ice.
I have also heard of people having a shared snow blower in the neighborhood. A person enters into an agreement with their neighbors to share the use of the blower.
Sharing is a great idea and more and more people are choosing it. I heard a snow blowing contractor say that people are taking snow removal into their own hands again and business is dropping.
Sharing is a great idea, if your neighbors are pals of yours; otherwise, difficulties can arise here, too.
If you have a truck, you could consider buying your own snowplow and attaching it to your truck, so that you could have your own snowplow truck.
But for those who do not have a truck, the question is: Can you afford monthly bills to pay for a truck?
Another snow removal option is paying a snowplowing contractor to remove your snow for you on a regular basis.
Ask for an estimate from each snowplowing contractor whom you interview, since the bill for snow removal can vary greatly.
Some people still need their paths and stairs cleared of snow, so ask the contractor about that. That can be a time consuming chore so be prepared to pay more for it.
Your contract should state if you are paying a flat rate or if your bill is determined by the size of the snowstorm and your property. Ask the contractor if he charges you twice if he comes back to clear your property twice in the same snowstorm.
Make sure you get all the costs for the service, including salt and sand and anything else they may dream up to charge you for. When you have all the fine print, you can then make more accurate price comparisons when you shop around.
The contractor you choose should also have insurance against damage caused by snow removal. Snow plows can damage driveways, buildings and fences.
Ask the contractor if there is a fee or penalty for terminating the contract should the need arise. The last best thing you can do is ask for references when interviewing a snowplowing contractor.
