Believe it or not, koi belong to the family of the common carp. The word "koi" is derived from the Japanese word which refers to "carp". Originally, koi were bred initially in the 1820s as a hobby. Courtyard koi ponds are extremely relaxing sights coupled with the sound of cascading waters. They are even more entrancing and interesting to look at when koi pond owners are able to successfully mix living plants within their koi ponds in order to replicate a natural pond environment.

In very few instances, though, these koi fish and plants cannot seem to co-exist. Indeed, owners will sometimes find it difficult to manage koi fish particularly when they are partnered with potted plants inside the pond. Owners may however try to place these potted plants on the pond floor and allow them to sit there.

Some large koi could really create messy ponds by knocking off plants. Koi can also have the tendency of "digging" up the soil. This however does not mean that owners cannot have plants in the pond. Koi pond owners can be really creative in finding solutions to these problems.

You can solve the problem by wrapping nets over pots in order to prevent the koi from digging the soil. Placing gravel on top of the potted plants can also help. Larger and bigger pots can use rocks. With the stones on top of the pots, the koi fish will have a harder time knocking them over due to their weight and they will not be able to get to the dirt underneath the stones in order to dig it up.

Koi ponds are really enhanced by putting water lilies in them. These lilies come in a wide array of varieties, including those that grow really well in shallow water and those that can adapt to deeper water. Although they are not oxygenating plants, they will be able to provide your koi with shelter and shade. Also, insects get attracted to plants. Koi fish are omnivores and will search the plant foliage to seek out insects and larva to munch on.

Koi fish also look for other types of food, other than the insects that they seek out in the plants. In fact, it is not uncommon to hear from koi owners saying that they have succeeded in training their koi to eat food out of their hands. It is really amazing that koi fish have the ability to recognize the person feeding them and become comfortable with him, approaching him during feeding time. In addition to pre-made koi food, koi fish enjoy a variety of people foods like peas, lettuce and even watermelons.

Having koi in your backyard pond is truly great. If truth be told, it is really an incredible experience to watch your koi fish in various colors swim with grace in your backyard pond. They are able to add a great amount of pleasure to their owner's lives and in turn are rewarded by the generosity and good care of their owners.
