Some Benefits Of Kinesio Tape

Regardless of the level of play, all athletes love to compete

. To do that, they have to stay healthy. But injuries happen. You turn an ankle while training or strain your back when doing something as mundane as putting away the groceries. No matter how it happens, an injury can prevent you from competing. And if you're injured mid-season, you can't afford to take months for your injury to heal. So more and more trainers and athletes are turning to kinesio tape to shorten their recovery time so they can get back on the field of play faster.

The Japanese chiropractor, Dr. Kenso Kase, is the father of this unique taping method. In the 1970s he found that his special attachment made of cotton strip sand acrylic adherent had some benefits to his clients. It then spread to other medical practitioners. Almost a decade later it began emerging on the Japanese professional teams. Almost forty years later it made its way to the worldwide stage, showing up on some of the world's most elite athletes at the recent Olympics in China.

The most common injuries occur to muscles and joints. Traditionally, a trainer would use athletic tape in multiple layers applied over the injury. And in the end the athlete would end up with a thick bandage wrapped around the area to keep it immobilized. The athlete would then go on to compete, risking further injury to the site because it can't go through its normal range of motion.

A primary benefit over traditional athletic tape is that this tape doesn't have to be wrapped around the injured area. This allows the muscle or joint to continue to move through its full range of motion without losing stability or impeding circulation.

Muscles are responsible for doing a lot more than just moving the body from point A to B. They do other things like control body temperature and regulate the flow of blood and lymphatic fluid through the body. Trainers apply the tape over the injured area. A unique wave pattern embedded in the adhesive lifts the skin. This blocks the pain receptors in the skin and also helps to minimize inflammation.

Another benefit of this tape is that it can be used to prevent injuries by helping the muscles relax, thus stopping overuse or repetitive motion injuries to occur. This is the opposite of traditional tape which inhibits muscle movement and decreases circulation, two affects that can actually cause injury to the athlete.

Some medical professionals haven't jumped on the kinesio tape bandwagon, in spite of the fact that that is has been used to treat everything from foot pains to muscle tears. But as long as the athletes see the benefits, such as shorter rehabilitation time that keeps them active in the sports they love, then this innovative for of treatment will be around for a long while.
