. While these are very efficient, the fire pit is fast catching up as the heater of choice for outdoor areas. With their strong resemblance to a campfire, these units draw people like moths to a flame. Sitting around a warm fire under a starlit sky will promote friendship and relaxation among your guests.

Commercial options are now available in a range of materials and styles. The frames are usually steel or brass although some bowls are made of porcelain. Some rust or burn through in a season or two but many last much longer. Heavy, ornate types may be fixed permanently in position while others are easily carried and set up wherever needed. Fuels used may be gas, wood or charcoal.

Portable fire pits may have several functions and are not limited to wood or charcoal burning types. The body of the pit may conceal a propane fuel tank. When not needed to provide heating, many double as occasional tables.

One of the disadvantages of wood is the smoke that blows in your eyes every time the wind changes. Gas is more environmentally acceptable. Once lit, they maintain a steady heat and do not need continual upkeep. Choices range from round to square in a variety of sizes. It might be a simple steel bowl on four legs. This is easily moved around to take advantage of the best location in the garden. There are also very elaborate models which can be set up permanently to become an elegant and intriguing feature in a backyard.

Campfires have a magnetism about them that is hard to resist. The wonderful aroma of burning wood draws people to gather to chat and socialise. When used in moderation, the impact on the environment is not excessive. Wood and charcoal burning pits have an authentic appeal that cannot be matched by gas. They are normally cheaper and their location is not restricted by gas outlets. However there needs to be room for a stockpile of fuel. Occasional cleaning out of the units is another consideration. The timber burnt in these needs to be thoroughly dry; otherwise they will emit a lot of smoke.

To create a striking feature in a backyard, purchase a circular unit. Surround it with retaining rocks encircled with gravel, grass or decorative cement. If you'd like your pit to double as a barbecue choose one with an attachable grill.

If the pit is to spend its life outdoors, a waterproof cover will prevent it rusting away. Fire proof mats are also essential in some instances and will help prevent accidents. Commercial kits sometimes include a poker and/or marshmallow sticks.

Protective grates will help contain sparks. Units made of cold-rolled steel will not rust away so easily. Another option is a bowl fitted in a black marble table. This creates a very stylish piece of furniture. Wheeled models make it easy to move them under cover between uses. Your guests will love gathering round a fire pit whichever type you choose.
