Some Essential Planning Safari Holidays

For those soon to travel into the wild outdoors and go in search of the Big Five

, here are some essential tips for planning safari holidays.

Safari Essentials

Safari excursions can vary from those that are based in tents. They may be mobile and strive to recreate a more natural feel to being in a different climate to those that offer a one off luxury holiday for couples on a honeymoon. Both may, of course, be part of one of the many activity holidays available for holidaymakers and will involve some thought as to what you will need to take with you.

Key things to remember to pack include your flight tickets, itinerary, money, insurance details, passport, visa, extra ID and a copy of your passport. Pack these safely in a place where you can reach them. Also pack a few pairs of short-sleeved cotton tops and shorts whilst also remembering some extra clothing essentials.

It is, for example, important to take a range of long-sleeved tops and trousers with you for the evenings when you'll need extra warmth and the option to cover your skin to protect you from mosquito bites. Take neutral and earth coloured clothes rather than white or cream tones. It is important not to stand out when on a safari walk or drive and you are less visible when wearing shades of brown, olive and khaki.

Packing It Right

Conditions you'll experience on a safari will differ from country to country and it is worth bearing in mind that you may well get a bit dirty as you travel across different landscapes. Don't forget to take equipment for all occasions including your washing kit, insect repellent, sun glasses, baby wipes, a needle and thread for repairs, lip balm, hand cream, first aid kit, waterproof and fleece.

Although a camera and book are important, remove any other objects that are not essential. Travelling light on activity holidays means less to carry and less to worry about. Feeling tired may be unavoidable, but make sure you don't cause injury by carrying a larger than necessary load. Pack small and light and you'll also have an easier time at the airport and when using safari vehicles. A soft bag with an internal frame is recommended, as these are easily stored.

Whichever one of the activity breaks or safari trips you choose, the best way to make the most of your stay is to do your research and get your belongings in order. Start the process well in advance and you'll find your holiday less stressful, with extra time to sort out any problems, from the out of date passport to buying the last minute hat or sun cream.
