Golden Doodle dogs are a hybrid. They are the offspring of a purebred golden retriever mated with a purebred poodle. The character of the resulting puppy can vary between the friendliness of the retriever, common in animals over twenty five pounds, or the alert intelligence of the poodle, which is more often seen in the smaller ones. They are touted for their coats which do not shed excessively. However, there are a few weaknesses to each breed that breeders try to avoid.

The dogs come in standard, medium and miniature size. Since the height, weight and color of the coat are the result of crossing different breeds, the results can vary. The most usual colors for the coat are gold, red, cream or white. Less common are dogs with black or silver coats. And, a puppy with a brown coat is counted as rare.

The weight for a standard sized, adult dog is approximately forty five pounds. An animal in the medium category is generally expected to be between thirty and forty pounds. A small sized one is anticipated to be between fifteen and twenty pounds when reaching full adulthood. Of course, weights will vary depending on the dog and its growth.

Neither the American Kennel Club nor the United Club recognizes the breed because it is a hybrid. They only register purebred dogs. The hybrid has been deliberately produced since the early nineties, but the definitive characteristics of a separate breed have not yet been established.

Hip dysplasia is a condition that can afflict both the parent breeds and one thing the breeders try to avoid recreating in the pups. Another potential area of trouble is eye disease that both poodles and golden retrievers may be prone too. Some breeders focus on selectively breeding certain coats, often trying to reduce the qualities that cause allergies to dog hair in people.

The purpose of these cross breeds is to be good family pets or service dogs. Their intelligence makes them easily trainable, in most cases. They generally like humans, are even tempered and tolerate other dogs well. They have been noted as strong swimmers and good birders. The healthy vigor and good humor of the animals has been counted as one of the characteristics of hybrids in general, and this one in particular. The puppies are very cute and endear themselves to their owners with their eager to play personalities.

Puppies are available through breeders. Prices vary depending on the rarity of the dog. The puppies should be vaccinated, wormed and checked out by a vet before coming home with you. Oftentimes, breeders will ship dogs on airplanes or through other forms of transportation to get the puppy to his new home.
