Some Kinds of Gears We should Know
Although gears are widely used in our daily life, most of you still do not have a clear idea about them. Many people may know that gear is one of the most basic transmission devices. It is a very important mechanical part, and can be seen in many applications.
What is the gear? A gear is a toothed machine part, such as a wheel or cylinder that meshes with another toothed part to transmit motion or to change speed or direction. It is a transmission configuration for a specific ratio of engine to axle torque in a motor vehicle. And one advantage of gears is that the teeth of a gear can prevent slipping. Since gears are applied in different machines such as cars, bicycles, and large equipments there are must be various kinds of gears to meet different requirements. The following are some different types of gears.
Firstly, the simplest type of gear is the spur gear. Spur gears have straight teeth, and are mounted on parallel shafts. Sometimes, many spur gears are used at once to create very large gear reductions. Because this kind of gear is so common, they can be used in many daily electrical household appliances like electric screwdriver, washing machine and clothes dryer. But to our surprise, they are rarely applied in cars. That is because spur gears can be really loud. Each time a gear tooth engages a tooth on the other gear, the teeth collide, and this impact makes a noise. Moreover, it also increases the stress on the gear teeth. In order to reduce the noise and stress in the gears, most of gears in cars are helical.
Now, let us see the second category, i.e. the helical gears. Helical gears are similar to spur gears except that the gears teeth are at an angle with the axis of the gears. Besides, they are more refined than the spur gears. Compared to spur gears, helical gears operate with less noise and vibration. At any time, the load on helical gears is distributed over several teeth which can reduce the wear. But every coin has two sides, obviously, helical gears also have some disadvantages except those advantages. For instance, one disadvantage of helical gears is a resultant thrust along the axis of the gear, which needs to be accommodated by appropriate thrust bearings, and a greater degree of sliding friction between the meshing teeth, often addressed with additives in the lubricant.
Another category of gear I have to mention is the worm gear. A worm gear is used when a large speed reduction ratio is required between crossed axis shafts which do not intersect. Efficiency of worm gear drives depends to a large extent on the helix angle of the worm.
The above are the three important types of gears. All of them have their own characteristics and functions. At the same time, they are all very useful for different machines. Thus, it is quite necessary for you to learn something about them.
