The term metal buildings is more likely to make one think about huge
, immense arenas and stadiums than it is to make one think about smaller buildings, like homes and little sheds. But the fact is that metal can be used to make structures of any size.
By far the most common material that is used, other than concrete, is wood. For hundreds of years it was used because it was available plentifully. Only recently has metal started being used, particularly because it required advanced technology to manufacture it, which has only lately been developed. But it is popular now because it is so strong. There are numerous disasters which can endanger a building, but metal is more likely to withstand such dangers.
In terms of extracting resources, using wood means that trees must be cut down. This leads to deforestation. As everyone knows, global warming is a major issue these days. Steel, on the other hand, is mined with less damage to the environment. There is an environmental impact, to be sure, but mining activities to extract steel affects less area than cutting trees. Also, steel can be recycled easily by melting it down, whereas wood has a limited number of uses.
It is true that metal is more costly as a building material, but you get what you pay for. If what is wanted is a structure that can attract attention while being endurable, then metal materials are more desirable. Also, the chemical composition of metal is such that it can be made to form all kinds of different shapes. Curves, for instance, can be created, rather than traditional linear lines. The result is that there is much more variety of forms that such buildings can take, such as designing a uniquely shaped
carport.
Steel buildings are much more sturdy than anything made with wood. Wood will break after a certain amount of pressure is applied, but the breaking point of metal is significantly higher. In fact, it will bend significantly before it breaks. This is a significant safety feature. If there is any possibility of damage, it will be caught before the structure deteriorates further, causing injury or loss of life.
One can reduce the amount of energy used to regulate temperature in metal buildings. In winter, buildings will need to be heated, whereas in summer buildings will have to be cooled. Metal can be used to circulate hot or cold air out, and keep the opposite kind of air inside, depending on what is required. Therefore, little energy is required for warming or cooling the air.
Metal is very popular in the post-modern era. Metal is attractive because of the way it shines when light is reflected off of it. People who walk past the building are bound to notice it, whereas other building materials look ordinary in comparison.
It's relatively recently that metal buildings are being built, but this is a trend that can only increase over time. The use of metal has had a remarkable impact in architectural history, and as it is used more it will gain even more prominence. A new era in building arrived when metal started to be used.
