Some Tips On Climbing Ben Nevis
Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in Scotland and therefore an appealing challenge for those that like to climb legendary landmarks
. So, given the scale of the peak some 1,300 metres it can be a dangerous and risky pursuit so the right mountain gear and preparation is crucial.
Even in spring the top of the mountain can have a deep covering of snow and snowfall can be expected while you are climbing the summit. Visibility can therefore be poor and weather conditions can be changeable. It may start out as sunny and warm at the foot of the mountain but this can become a lot more hostile as you ascend. So jeans, a T-shirt and trainers are not the right gear here although you may be surprised how many inexperienced hikers do take off in such attire. So even outside of the colder winter months, inner mid and outer layers are recommended and even head buff accessories for when you get higher up.
Of course wind and waterproof clothing is also essential. As many parts of the UK, we can enjoy more than one season in one day so do be prepared for a dry sunny warm day to turn to hailstones and strong wind yes even in summer months. Actually the summer presents its own dangers in the Scottish highlands the midgies whose bites can be ferocious for the size of the little things. So a bottle of effective midgie repellent is another vital item to be included in your mountain rucksack.
If you are attempting the Ben in winter months crampons and ice axe will be necessary. You can research online how to use these tools as they may well turn out to save your life. There are dangerous gullies to avoid at the summit too and these will be much more treacherous in low visibility conditions, especially when you are tired from the gruelling ascent. There is also a recommended escape route once you have reached the summit, so be sure to brief yourself well about this before embarking on this hike.
Of course there is lots of safety and orienteering equipment you will need such as a compass, an ordnance survey map and an emergency whistle. Also emergency items of food and water must be considered as it can get quite rugged and wild up there in the heights of Ben Nevis. Some folk even like to camp up there, which needless to say calls for only the best all weather bivi bags and
sleeping bags. However long you choose to take to climb Ben Nevis, with the right preparation and mountain gear you can enjoy a memorable hike with really spectacular views.
