In spite of my many Spanish-speaking friends and acquaintances, I only know a few dozen words in Spanish. It is a fact that I would like to soon change! Is learning Spanish on your list of things to do? Learning another language offers many advantages, and speaking Spanish may be even more beneficial than you know if you live in the United States. The job market recognizes the value of Spanish speakers, making them a sought after resource for companies of all shapes and sizes. If you speak the language, you increase your ability to communicate with customers, thereby immediately increasing your potential customer base. How can this help you as an employee? Higher wages and increased marketability to employers are two of the benefits to be reaped. If you speak Spanish and English already and are not being rewarded by your employer, you may want to find new employment that will reward you. Your income may increase substantially! If you ever escape to Mexico like so many southern Californians, you know that the street vendors pump up prices for their non Spanish speaking customers. If you speak Spanish, you're going to receive beneficial treatment, which usually results in lower prices and better overall service. No doubt, all of us have read books in our lifetime that influence (and educate) our opinions and understanding of our own cultures. Now think of how much culture you will experience by simply being able to read Spanish books and newspapers; a new manner of thinking and feeling will be exposed to you. When it comes to learning a second language, Spanish is an easy one to learn. Spanish and English vocabulary is very similar. Besides, Spanish is easy to ready -- even for a beginner. Do you like to offer help to people? After you learn Spanish you'll be able to help the people in your daily life even more because now you'll be able to speak two languages. The benefits hold true in reverse: speaking Spanish will allow you to ask for help from people that you normally wouldn't communicate with. You'll also be able to experience the heart of your local Spanish culture. Spanish is the predominant language at many restaurants and clubs. If you don't speak it, it's probably safe to say you won't be going there. But once you learn the language basics, you'll realize that you don't need to be so intimidated visiting mainly Spanish-speaking establishments. You can instantly expand the number of cable channels you are able watch. Spanish television is a real kick in the pants if you've never watched it! Spanish culture is alive and well in practically ever program. You're probably going to be surprised the first time you watch and really listen to what is being said. The same holds true for Spanish radio counterparts; their format is radically different than a typical English-speaking radio station. The best reason to learn Spanish is a simple one: by learning how to speak a new language, you instantly double the amount of friends you have!
