Some You Time For a Longer Life
New research from the University of California at Davis has uncovered how relaxation techniques may be linked to longer, healthier lives. Telomerase, activity was found by the UC Davis researchers to by highest in people who regularly practiced relaxation techniques such as meditation, exercise, and group therapy. Telomerase is an enzyme that works on the ends of human DNA to keep it from degrading early. Telomeres are sequences of DNA at the end of chromosomes that are managed by the enzyme telomerase and tend to get shorter every time a cell divides. When telomeres drop below a critical length, the cell can no longer divide properly and eventually dies.
Several researchers from different institutions recently won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for uncovering the actions of telomerase. The Davis group headed by Dr. Clifford Saron is the first to show that relaxation techniques can alter its activity. According to Dr. Saron, "It appears that the telomerase activity is attributable to psychological changes that increase a person's ability to cope with stress and maintain feelings of well-being."
In the research study the scientists found that telomerase activity was about one-third higher in the blood than that found in controls. Associated with the increase in telomerase activity, cognitive tests on the subjects found that those that practiced relaxation techniques scored higher on feelings of having a purpose in life, mindfulness, and having long-term goals that were aligned with their current situation.
This research showing that activities that increase a person's sense of well-being may have a profound effect on the most essential aspects of their health.
This work comes shortly after a group at Harvard headed by Matthew Killingworth show that a wandering mind can lead to unhappiness. Using an unique iPhone application, the Harvard researchers reached out to over 2,000 volunteers over a several month long period of time and asked them what they were doing that instant in addition to how they were feeling. The results showed that many people many people's minds wander throughout the day and often have nothing to do with what they are actually doing at the moment. Additionally the research showed that when people's minds are wandering they are actually extremely unhappy with their situation.
Together the research from UC Davis and Harvard University strongly suggest that relaxation and practicing mindful awareness of what one is doing throughout the day can indeed improve a persons health, sense of well-being, and may even extend the length of life in humans.
